Pet Travel Preparation

Compliance with Airline Policies and Destination State/Country Requirements are MANDATORY!

You love your dog or cat and cannot imagine being without them.  So, when you travel for vacation, to visit family, or just because, you want them to be with you. Now that you have decided on the destination and that you want your dog or cat to travel with you, lets discuss how to prepare your pet for travel.

Do you know, if you do not meet the requirements for travel by the airline, your pet may not be able to go with you. Also, if you do not meet the pet entry requirements of the destination state (i.e., Hawaii) or country, your pet could be denied entry and required to be returned to the state/country of origin or placed into mandatory quarantine. Be aware, this will be at your expense!

1. Find the requirements for travel for the airline.

Do you realize the requirements for pet travel varies by airline? Some will transport pets in-cabin, while others will allow the transport of pets in-cabin, checked baggage, or via cargo. So, do your research! Never assume the pet travel policies are the same. Each airline can develop their own policies to ensure the safety of pets traveling via air.

2. Find the requirements for travel for the destination state or country.

When traveling domestically or internationally, you must also follow the pet entry requirements of the destination. Depending upon the destination, the requirements may be minor (i.e., health certificate issued by a USDA accredited veterinarian). Or the requirements may be detailed (i.e., health certificate issued by a USDA accredited veterinarian, microchip, rabies vaccination, and rabies titer).
